Practical notes for your first days in the city — the same tips that go into every itinerary.
Go between 7 and 9am, follow the locals' queue, and order at least one rice noodle roll (cheung fun) and one steamed dumpling per person. Skip anywhere advertising a "tourist menu".
Arrive at opening to beat the tour groups. Look for the stone lions at the gate, the ivory carvings in the main hall, and the rooftop ceramics — details most visitors walk straight past.
Register online before you fly, collect your badge at the hall, and book restaurants near Pazhou in the same week — during the fair, the city's best tables fill up fast.
